5 Tips for Achieving Luminous Skin for Women Over 40

Updated: May 2, 2023

As we age, our skin naturally begins to lose some of the qualities it had when we were younger. Don’t get me wrong, aging skin is beautiful, but once we reach the age of 40 or so, some of our natural luminosity is lost.

The reason for this is simple: we develop dark spots of hyperpigmentation, extra texture on the skin, and dark circles under the eyes. This is normal, but it does detract from the glow of your natural skin tone. On top of natural changes to skin tone and texture, the movement of your facial muscles also creates physical changes to your facial structure.

If you are among the many women over 40 looking for a way to improve skin tone and achieve a beautiful natural glow without becoming a licensed esthetician, you’ve come to the right place! There is no reason to spend thousands of dollars on expensive treatments and fast fixes; all it takes to get your glow back is a few simple makeup tips and tricks.

Here, we’re going to be focused on the Fusion Method, which is what I use to give clients at every age that flawless, glowing from within, enhanced luminous look. If you want an in-depth explanation of this technique or are a visual learner, check out my recent Instagram Reel all about the Fusion Method.

To help you start using these techniques in your everyday makeup routine, follow these simple tips:

1. Skip the Opaque Makeup

Luminous skin is glowy and light and should look like you are shining from within. Youthful skin tends to be more luminous thanks to even skin tone, which allows for a brighter, more glowy appearance. As we age and develop texture and hyperpigmentation, some of that luminosity is lost.

While your first instinct might be to make your whole face the same tone by using a full coverage foundation, this won’t do your skin any favors. Full coverage and heavy makeup often enhances skin texture rather than hiding it. You want low opacity products designed specifically for color correcting and evening texture.

You can use opaque products in low impact mimetic zones, but we’ll cover that in tip number 2!

2. Understand ‘Mimetic’ Zones

‘Mimetic’ zones are just a fancy term for the groups of muscles in our faces.

High impact mimetic zones are areas that have high movement or high texture, like the corners of your mouth or a blemish. Specific products, like Demi Colour color correcting products, are designed for use in high impact mimetic areas and deliver the perfect amount of pigment for subtle, barely-there looks.

Low impact mimetic zones are the areas of your face that experience less movement, like the sides of your nose and the lower portion of your jaw. These areas can tolerate higher opacity products since they experience less chance of creasing.

By understanding how the different areas of your face should be treated, you’ll be able to choose the right products for each zone.

3. Find Your Perfect Color Match

Finding the perfect color match is important no matter your age, but when you are trying to achieve a luminous look on mature skin, it is extra important! The wrong color can highlight the wrong features of your skin. To get perfectly color-matched, you should find a makeup artist. Makeup artists can help you to identify your undertones and correctly pair you with the perfect color-correcting products.

4. Be Intentional

When applying makeup to your high mimetic zones, it is super important to take your time and place product intentionally. Because you should be using color correcting products in these areas, they need to be applied precisely. You can’t just slap on color correcting products and call it a day; you need to dedicate a little bit of time to get it just right.

By using a small brush, applying small amounts of makeup, and taking the time to carefully place the pigment in the right place, you reduce the chances of the product rubbing off or creasing. This is an awesome way to create a seamless, natural, glowy look with just a few simple products.

5. Enhance Your Natural Features

If your eyes have become more deeply set, or you are developing creases along your lash line, embrace it! Fighting against your natural features will only highlight what you don’t like, hiding the true beauty underneath. Follow that natural hollow of your eye to create a beautiful shadow that will move with your lids and never crease. Create brightness and lift along the outer corners and brow bone with a highlighting color corrector. And of course, don’t forget to smoke out that lower lash line to add a touch of glamor to your everyday makeup look!
