5 Mature Skin Makeup Mistakes That Will Ruin A Natural Look

Updated: May 2, 2023

The no-makeup, natural makeup look is one of the most beautiful makeup looks for anybody— but for women over 40, it’s possibly the perfect look. Properly done, natural makeup looks can make you look younger, with brighter, luminous skin. And you don’t need a lot of products to do it and you can see in this video. In fact, sometimes there’s too much of a good thing, and we end up making mistakes that make our natural look seem… well, unnatural! Here are 5 makeup mistakes that will ruin a natural look— and the one big tip for the perfect natural look every single time!

1. BB Cream

BB Cream is a product that’s somewhere between a moisturizer and foundation. These creams are often marketed as the ultimate multi-function product, with some creams claiming that they can do everything that a serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock would do if worn separately. It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

For many women, especially those with mature skin, it IS too good to be true. With an all-in-one product, it can be impossible to find a good balance between moisture and pigment density. This can lead to uneven tones, a chalky effect if your skin is dry, and separation within just a few hours if your skin tends to be oily. Instead, stick to products that can deliver what they promise. You’ll have better results with dedicated color correctors than one product that tries to do it all.

2. Primers

Makeup primers work by adding a layer of texture to your skin so that your makeup sticks better. While these can diminish the appearance of pores, they can actually make rough spots look rougher because they’re yet another layer of something stuck to the top of your skin.

The fact is, you don’t need thick coverage for a flawless natural look. Instead, you should stick to small amounts of light product. You don’t want to cover your whole face— you want to address targeted areas. That way, your skin can breathe and you can look perfectly natural.

3. Botox

When you get botox injections, you’re actually using microdoses of botulism toxin to paralyze your facial muscles in an attempt to hide the signs of aging. While this procedure might smooth your skin, it doesn’t look natural. This is because everybody’s face has dozens of tiny muscles. It’s called your mimetic system, and these muscles allow you to blink, smile, and emote. Most of these movements are completely involuntary, and we notice them subconsciously on other people. This means that when you can’t make these tiny, subtle movements, you don’t look natural!

What you can do instead to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, laugh lines, and crows’ feet is use the Fusion Method to work with your facial muscles instead of against them. By applying products carefully and intentionally, you can create a totally natural look that lets your expressions shine through!

4. Expensive Foundation

As we age, we tend to lose some of our skin’s natural luminosity, even with a robust skin care routine. This is totally normal— the changes in our skin tell the story of a life well-lived! But it does mean that we do develop heavier texture and areas of higher pigment, which can make our skin look less youthful and light.

Foundation is a product that many women turn to to create an even skin tone. But what even expensive foundation actually does is make your entire face the same tone, and that creates a matte, unnatural look that often emphasizes skin texture instead of hiding it.

What you really want is light-coverage makeup that’s able to filter out your least favorite spots. That way, your face’s natural contours and shadows can work with your makeup to give you that glowing, luminous look. Color correcting will serve you better than going full matte.

5. Trending Tips

When you look at trending makeup tips, you’ll often see bright colors, thick product, and techniques that just don’t take your unique skin type into account. You’ll never be able to have a flawless natural look by following these trends, because the goal of them isn’t actually to create a natural look!

While these trends might look neat, they often aren’t ideal for women over 40 because they make it seem like you’re trying to hide your beautiful, mature skin. But you have nothing to hide! Your skin is beautiful, and a no-makeup makeup look only enhances your natural beauty.

The Best Way To Achieve A Natural Look

When you’re able to dodge these missteps, you’ll be well on your way to achieving the natural look of flawless skin. The best way to do this is by using a method that has you using light makeup in areas of high movement, with tints chosen based on color theory to cancel out the spots you’d rather not have.
